Preparing Digital Images for Projection

This procedure is based on Photoshop, but other image editing progs. will have very similar facilities.  The Society’s projector displays an image of 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high (XGA) and is calibrated for sRGB colour space

1. Edit image in your editing programme and crop as desired.  Do not resize yet, but “Save As” in an appropriate file for your masters, using a lossless format such as PSD or TIFF.

2. Convert the image colour space to sRGB (if not already in that colour space)
With the image open in Photoshop 7 or CS, choose Image > Mode > Convert to profile
With the image open in CS2 or CS3, choose Edit >
Convert to profile
In Convert to Profile dialog box select as follows:-

Destination Space ........................ sRGB IEC61966-2.1
Engine ........................................... Adobe (ACE)
Ensure that Black Point Compensation is ticked
Ensure Flatten Image is ticked to flatten any layers and eliminate any channel masks

3. Adjust Image Size in Pixels
Choose Image >
Image Size
In Image Size dialog box select as follows:-

At the bottom left ensure that Constrain Proportions and Resample Image are both ticked
At top enter 1024 as pixel width.  If this results in pixel height becoming more than 768 then change it to 768, and width will reduce in proportion.  Ignore figures in Document Size.
At the bottom, select method for resampling image.  Bicubic Sharper is optimum for reducing image size, Bicubic Smoother for increasing image size.  If your programme does not have these options use Bicubic.

4. Check Image Mode.
Choose Image > Mode and ensure settings are RGB color and 8bits/channel

5. Save and Name File in JPEG
